Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.
First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)
Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.
You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.
Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in. erosion sediment meander canyon delta river basin deposition slope dam lake
The fourth grade did an activity called dirt day. We had two activities. This activity was located at the ditch in the playground at the little kids play ground. Our first activity was to look at how a canyon can form a lake. A canyon is a deep chasm in the ground. Mrs. Greenslade first dug up a pile of dirt to make it seem like a big canyon. Next, Mrs. Greenslade got a hose and she put it on top of the canyon. Then the canyon started to slope in. Slope means a hill that goes down and not up again. This caused erosion bacause it was wearing away the canyon by wind and water.During this erosion a valley has been formed by the water flowing through the rock of the canyon. A valley is a U shaped hill, canyon, or a mountain. Then a delta started to flow from all the rain. A delta is a fan shaped river that flows into a bigger river. The delta started to meander around the leaves and the natural dams. This means that sediment has been building up and it has been moving around the dams and leaves. Sediment is earth's materials from the lakes shore that flows at the top of the a river and lakes. During this event deposition was happening. Deposition is sediment that floats down to the bottom of the lake, river, or ocean. A river is a big circle shaped pond that is not always fresh. Finally, we saw what erosion looked like. That was about our first activity! {Second paragraph} Our second activity was lots of fun. The fourth grade was building dams in a ditch at the second and fifth grade playground. We made dams out of leaves, dirt, rock and left over branches. A dam is something that blocks water or anything that in its way that floats. We choose partners. My partners were Rachel Umansky and Blair Smithwick. To start off my group got all the materials we needed. We had five minutes to build our dams. The first dams were keeping the water from flowing down the ditch. By time the water got to me there was lots of sediment in it because there was dirt on the ditch so it picked up the earth matiriels. None of the dams succeeded. This was a fun day with all the activities we did.
